What fraud traffic is and why it is dangerous for business
Fraud traffic — is fake clicks on your ads generated by bots, scripts, or dishonest competitors. Each such click bills money from your ad budget without bringing a single real buyer. According to Association of National Advertisers, in 2025–2026 advertisers lose from $68 to $84 billion a year specifically because of fraudulent traffic. Learn more about fraud traffic.
The problem is worse because modern bots have learned to mimic live users skillfully: they scroll pages, move the cursor, and stay on the site for the needed number of seconds. Your analytics sees «normal» sessions, while money keeps leaking.
«The advertiser sees pretty numbers in the account: thousands of clicks, low CPC, high CTR. But there are no conversions. That is the classic fraud symptom — the money is gone, there is no result, and the system is sure everything is fine».
How fraud traffic destroys the ad budget: 5 mechanics
1. Direct click fraud (Click Fraud)
The most common scheme. Competitors or special bots click your ads in Yandex Direct, Google Ads or Meta Ads, artificially exhausting the daily budget. The result — your ads turn off in the middle of the day, when your target audience is most active, and you pay for emptiness.
Businesses in competitive niches are especially vulnerable: banks/finance, legal services, medicine, real estate, e-commerce. Click cost is high here, so even a few hundred fraud visits a day can cost tens of thousands of rubles a month.
2. Data poisoning (Data Poisoning)
This is a hidden and the most destructive form of fraud. Bots visit your site, mimicking ideal customers: they look at product pages for a long time, add to cart, study delivery terms. Your ad system records these patterns and starts optimizing campaigns for that «audience».
In the end the Yandex or Google algorithm starts showing your ads to more and more bots — because they «look like» your best users. You scale not sales, but a systematic error.
3. Attribution distortion
Fraud clicks distort data on which channels and ads work. You see that one campaign shows excellent CTR and shift budget toward it — not suspecting that bots, not live people, drive the high CTR. Channels that actually work stay unfunded.
4. Inflating mobile app metrics
For apps there is a special scheme — Click Injection. Malware on the user's smartphone tracks the moment of a real app install and a millisecond before it completes generates a «final click», claiming the reward for an organic user. You pay the partner network for a customer who came on their own.
5. Fraud in retargeting
Retargeting is considered one of the most effective tools — you show ads to people who have already been on your site. But if bots have piled up in your retargeting base, you spend budget «chasing» users who do not exist. According to traffic-verification specialists, in some niches up to 30% of retargeting audiences contain fraud profiles.
How much are you losing right now?
Industry statistics say that on average from 10% to 25% of the ad budget goes to fraud traffic. For a company with a monthly budget of 50,000 rubles that is from 5,000 to 12,500 rubles of pure losses every month — money that will not bring a single sale.
Meanwhile standard platform tools — built-in Google and Yandex protection — filter only the most obvious fraud. Complex schemes that mimic human behavior they do not see.
How to detect fraud traffic in your campaigns
There are several warning signals to watch in your analytics:
- High CTR with low conversion. Many clicks, almost no leads or sales — a classic click-fraud symptom.
- Anomalous traffic spikes. Sharp spikes in visits at unusual times — at night or on holidays — often indicate bot activity.
- Suspicious geography. Clicks from regions where you do not operate and do not show ads.
- Click speed that is too high. If one IP address clicks your ad several times a minute — that is clear fraud.
- Zero time on site. Bots often do not stay on the page or, conversely, show a perfectly «correct» session time — numbers that are too round.
Why built-in platform protection is not enough
Google and Yandex do have their own antifraud systems and even refund money for some invalid clicks. However, built-in protection has fundamental limits.
First, platforms are not interested in admitting the scale of the problem — because every click, even fraudulent, brings them revenue. Second, their algorithms are trained on historical data and handle new fraud schemes poorly. Third, they cannot analyze user behavior on your site after the click — and that is where the full picture is most often visible.
Independent antifraud systems work differently: they analyze signals before the click, at the click, and after it, creating multi-layer protection.
How ClikBy protects your ad budget
The platform ClikBy uses behavioral biometrics and ensemble machine learning to detect fraud at every stage of the ad funnel. The system analyzes more than 130 features in real time — from device technical parameters to micro-movements of the cursor and scrolling patterns.
- Blocking before the budget is charged. A fraud click is identified and blocked before the platform can charge your account.
- Protecting data from poisoning. Bots are excluded from retargeting and lookalike audiences so platform algorithms learn only from real users.
- Transparent reporting. You see how many fraud clicks were blocked, where they came from, and how much budget was saved.
- Compatibility with all platforms. Yandex Direct, Google Ads, Meta Ads, VK Ads, myTarget and other traffic sources.
The result of adopting ClikBy is real money that stays in your budget and goes toward acquiring real customers. You can also read our case study in which we explained in detail How we got +30% real app installs.
Bottom line: how much you can save
Companies that adopted independent antifraud solutions on average save from 15% to 30% of the ad budget. For a business with a 1 million ruble yearly budget — that is from 150,000 to 300,000 rubles that now work toward a real result instead of going to fraudsters.
